The 1m2™ by EeStairs: the perfect solution for student housing

The 1m2 stairs of EeStairs turned out to be the perfect solution to create extra living space in the new student residences in the Anatomy Building of the Boerhaave campus in Leiden.

The Anatomy Building, part of Bio Science Park Leiden, is a former medical faculty, built in the 1920s. Until the beginning of this century it was in use at Leiden University. VVKH Architects was commissioned to make the Anatomy Building suitable as a place for international PhD students and researchers.

Extra floor

Thanks to the high spaces in the monumental building, it was possible to create an insert floor in the living units. This allowed more living space to be created. The space-saving 1m2 staircases from EeStairs are an important link in the plan.

Ideal solution

´EeStairs has worked closely with VVKH Architecten from the design phase. We have supplied a prototype staircase for the model home, “says Cornelis van Vlastuin, creative director of EeStairs. ‘During the entire process, maximum accessibility of the mezzanine and minimum use of space were our joint ambition. Our 1m2 turned out to be the ideal solution, thanks to the minimal use of space in combination with the stylish appearance.’

44 1m2 stairs

In collaboration with A3 Timmer and Afbouw, a total of 44 1m2 staircases have been placed in the renovated Anatomy Building, finished in RAL 1019. Cornelis van Vlastuin is impressed by the end result. ‘The student residences look great. The residents will certainly have a lot of fun with this. “
